PRAYING MANTIS

WARNING:  GRAPHIC CONTENT

This is a previously unpublished picture I took of what was left of a poor hummingbird after being attacked by an Arizona Bordered Mantis.  It was found dead in the feeder with its breast eaten cleanly out in a circular pattern.  I had seen the mantid on the feeder and assumed it was just eating bees.

I went into the house and came out an hour later to find this.  The full-grown mantids usually show up in late summer.  I now relocate them to the bee dishes or across the street.  The one below was well fed on bees and showed no interest in the hummingbirds.  I would have stepped in if necessary.

ON A MUCH LIGHTER NOTE, WATCH THIS TRAILER FOR THE 1957 film "the deadly mantis"
