I had the pleasure of attending a hummingbird banding session with Sheri L. Williamson, an ornithologist and author of A Field Guide to Hummingbirds of North America (Peterson Field Guide). The session was held at the Casa de San Pedro in Hereford, Arizona. It was great chatting with Sheri, who is probably the foremost hummingbird expert in the country.

Hummingbird banding is utilized for research. The migration of banded birds...

The first day of my latest Arizona hummingbird search took me to Ash Canyon Bird Sanctuary, the home of Mary Jo Ballator and the most likely place to see the Lucifer Hummingbird. Mary Jo has chairs set in several different areas of her property where bird watchers and photographers can film not only hummingbirds, but warblers, tanagers, woodpeckers, grosbeaks, Montezuma Quail and many other birds. Her African Grey parrot “Cook...

ARUBA, BONAIRE AND CURACAO – An eight day cruise to find one hummingbird!

Well, I learned a lesson on this cruise. If you want to photograph hummingbirds on islands near the Equator, don’t do it from a cruise ship. Apparently the hummers feed like mad early in the morning and then siesta in the trees during the mid-day as they would expend too much energy foraging in the intense sun. Or at least that’s what I was told. By the t...

Madera Canyon is located in Southeastern Arizona and is on the migration path for seven species of hummingbirds. Many other types of birds also make their home here, so the area is a birders paradise. It is a known resting place for many migrating species, so most people you run into have either binoculars or a camera around their neck.

There are only three places to stay in the canyon (most of it is within a national forest),...

The Paton Center opens at 6:30 am and I was there at 6:30 sharp. At first I thought they weren’t open because I was the only one there. I learned a big lesson from the cruise to the ABC Islands. I didn’t want to hear that if I got there at 8, the hummers were already in “Siesta Mode” and hiding in the trees.

A few people started arriving around 7:15 so I had the place to myself for 45 minutes to get the lay of the land. I was r...

Flamingo Gardens is a lovely botanical garden and wildlife sanctuary covering 60 acres in Davie, Florida just outside of Ft. Lauderdale.  They boast over 3000 species of rare and exotic, tropical, sub-tropical and native plants.  I figured that if I was going to find a hummingbird in the Ft. Lauderdale area that I would probably find it there.

I learned a very important lesson today, though. As a hummingbird photographer i...

I’m off on my first ever trip to film hummingbirds.  I love taking cruises, so I booked myself on a trip to Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao on the Crown Princess.  These three islands are home to the Ruby Topaz and the Blue-Tailed Emerald Hummers.  Do you think that this amateur photographer will be able to find and capture some photos of these birds?  Stick with me and find out!

I managed to book myself into Ft. Laud...

The Arizona Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson has a wonderful little hummingbird aviary. I remember visiting it years ago when I visited Tucson for a medical conference. This was well before I started feeding them and trying to attract them to my home. Perhaps this visit was one of the things that started me on my hummingbird loving journey.

I decided to go back and take my new camera (Nikon D500) and try to photograph a few of th...

Today’s adventure was to visit Santa Cruz, California, to find and photograph the rare, nearly completely white leucistic hummingbird who resides in the UCSC Arboretum. I am currently on a Princess cruise ship. Upon docking in San Francisco it was off to Enterprise Car Rental. Once in the rental car, two friends and I drove down to Santa Cruz to visit the arboretum.

I heard that if you want to find this bird you should look for...
